Target Audience Research

Before filming we have carried out some research in to our target audience to confirm that our narrative will be appropriate for them, we asked a variety of girls from the ages of 15-25 the following three questions.

1. What issues do you feel are relevant to your age group?
The responses to this question varied from alcohol, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and social media. We were shocked but impressed that all of the given options can be seen and are relevant to our narrative, confirming that it will appeal to them.

2. Which gender would you prefer a lead role to be?

With a target audience of females we expected that they would desire a female protagonist and we were correct so will definitely pursue this.

3. Do you like films where you can relate to the characters?

All of our participants said yes. This can be explained using the Uses and Gratifications Theory. Viewers like characters they can relate to as they can identify with them:
  • finding reinforcement for personal values
  • finding models of behaviour
  • identifying with valued other (in the media)
  • gaining insight into one's self
Because of this we will aim to make our protagonist as realistic as possible to allow the audience to empathise with her.

Our original research has taught us that as we are members of our target audience ourselves, we are very aware of the audiences needs from a film alike the one we desire to produce and therefore hope that our final trailer will be extremely successful in fulfilling the needs of our target audience.
